I started this blog, waaaay back in the day, because of bullshit like this.
Back then, while hearing of a child who had been abused to death by her parents, what do I notice as the headline leading the news? Discussions about who was worse at parenting, Jon Gosselin or Richard Heene. So, while real children the world over and truly suffering, we focus our attention on a reality tv attention whore and a wannabe reality tv attention whore, respectively.
Parents charged with neglect after ‘leaving 11-year-old son to play in backyard for 90 minutes’
Two parents have been charged with neglect after their son was reportedly left to play alone outside for 90 minutes.
The mum and dad in Florida weren’t home when their 11-year-old returned from school, according to Fox News.
So he picked up his basketball and starting shooting hoops until they got back.
A neighbour who saw him unattended allegedly called the police to raise her concerns and when the parents returned home, police were waiting to charge them with child negligence.
When I was 11, my mother was lucky if she knew where the hell I even was. And not for 90 minutes. ALL. DAMN. DAY.
Not because she was a bad parent (she wasn’t, my mom is hella awesome).
But, because I was an 11 year old kid. Playing outside.
What do you people want? One minute there are news stories and op-eds about how kids spend too much time indoors playing video games, but a kid is playing….in his own fucking yard….for 90 minutes and a nosy neighbor calls the cops? Because = neglect?
The parents, who wish to remain anonymous, told blog Reason that they couldn’t get home sooner and had hit traffic delays and bad weather.
Following their arrest, they were held overnight in jail, and according to the mum, their sons – aged 11 and four – will be kept by authorities for a month before attending day camp and day care this summer.
The parents are planning on pleading not guilty in criminal court soon, and until then are undergoing therapy and parenting classes, and their children are attending ‘play’ therapy.

I swear, sometimes I wish I could just punch someone in the throat for being stupid, and have society look at the person I punched and say, “Sorry bub, no harm no foul. Because you were stupid.”
